Truly Simple Elegant (1996 vintage - spring harvest)
(Zhen Chun Ya Hao)

Weight: 20 gram sample or 362 gram cake
Type: Raw Pu-erh (naturally fermented)
Grade: Premium
Production area: Yiwu Mountain, Xishuangbanna Prefecture, Yunnan Province

Taste characteristics:

After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, few tea manufacturers would select mountain specific raw materials for the manufacturing of tea cakes. That is, until 1994 when the Lin brothers, two teashop owners from Taiwan, traveled to YiWu Mountain in Yunnan, aspiring to recreate artisan antique tea cakes like those made by privately owned tea factories in China during the 1940s. Artisan antique tea cakes are considered the most sought-after Pu-erh tea cakes among Pu-erh enthusiasts. Together with the village chief of YiWu, they hired the only surviving tea master, Mr. Chiang Guan Xiu, from Sungping Hao, a famous tea factory during the 1940s, to supervise the making of those cakes.

Tea master Chiang selected the spring harvest of ancient tea trees from the two most prominent tea producing Yiwu villages; Mahei and Luoshuidong. It took him two years to collect the most desirable harvests to make this batch of tea cakes. Using traditional artisan processing techniques, the Truly Simple Elegant tea cake was created. It is important to note that, at the time, the team lead by the Lin brothers was the first in forty years to harvest the ancient tea trees of Yiwu Mountain. Since its production, this batch of tea cakes has been dryly stored in tea master Vesper Chan’s warehouse. To emulate the style of packaging of the antique tea cakes made in the 1940s, this cake came with no wrapping paper. The calligraphy on the newly added wrapping was done by Tea Master Chan.

This tea received the highest rating of the Wah Shan tea competition reported in the 16th issue of the Pu-erh Tea Pot Magazine. The judges of this tea competition unanimously agreed that this tea is pure and silky, while offering a plum and camphor scent. The “qi” of this tea is well balanced and it finishes with a lasting sweet note. With skilled brewing techniques, one can bring out varying flavors from the same leaves of this tea. This cake is one of the purest and most authentic Yiwu cakes in the Pu-erh industry today.
